Day 43 - Lymm to Dunham Massey

Wednesday 15th July

11 miles

The canal front at Lymm
A bright and sunny day. Walked into Lymm snapping away at pretty cottage, the village cross (17th c) which was built on a natural slab of rock. Walked up past the pond and over a busy road which was originally built as a turnpike road. In doing so they created a beautiful lake. Did a bit of grocery shopping.

After a coffee on the boat we cruised towards Bollington stopping by Ye Olde No 3 for water. We were surprised to see an Alsatian wandering around on the flat roof.

Stanford hospital theme in Dunham Massey Hall

After lunch we moored near bridge 26a. We strolled along the canal to the next bridge and along a lane to Dunham Massey Hall a NT property which is currently set as it was in the first world war as a military hospital, The Stamford Hospital. It was quite evocative with sounds of coughing and cries of pain as background noise and actors playing patients and nurses. As if the house itself wasn't enough there were very tame deer lounging in the sun on the lawn, a rose garden, a miniature canal with splendid borders on either side and a giant lily that flowers for one week only on several years.

A lovely mooring up on the embankment
Beautiful evening although a tad breezy as the canal was on quite a high embankment. Spent the evening watching buzzards soar and swallows going crazy over the many small insects about. It was a glorious sunset.
